Outdoor Dining Tables: Materials, Sizes & Buying Guide
Choosing the right outdoor dining table is about more than just size. It’s about material performance, layout, climate considerations, and how you plan to entertain.
Terra Outdoor Living offers a curated selection of outdoor dining tables crafted from premium teak, powder-coated aluminum, GFRC concrete, and ceramic table tops that resemble natural stone, all designed to perform beautifully in a wide range of outdoor environments.
Use the guide below to compare materials, explore sizing recommendations, and find answers to common questions that can help you select the perfect outdoor dining table for your space.
What materials are best for outdoor dining tables?
Outdoor dining tables are available in a variety of materials, each offering distinct benefits:
- Teak dining tables are naturally weather-resistant and age gracefully over time, developing a soft silver patina if left untreated. They’re ideal for coastal climates and year-round outdoor use.
- Powder-coated aluminum dining tables are lightweight, rust-resistant, and easy to maintain, making them a great option for modern patios and poolside settings.
- GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) dining tables deliver a bold, architectural look with exceptional durability. Their substantial weight makes them especially well-suited for exposed or windy environments.
- Ceramic table top dining tables offer durable, easy-care surfaces that resemble natural stone. Resistant to heat, scratches, and staining, ceramic tops are ideal for frequent dining and entertaining while maintaining a refined, understated aesthetic.
How do I choose the right size outdoor dining table?
The right table size depends on both your space and how many people you plan to seat:
- 4–6 seats: 60–72" rectangular or round tables
- 6–8 seats: 84–96" rectangular tables
- 8–10+ seats: 96"+ tables or extendable dining tables
For comfort and circulation, we recommend allowing at least 36 inches of clearance around the table for chairs and walkways.
Rectangular, round, or square? What shape works best outdoors?
Table shape influences everything from seating capacity to circulation and visual balance. Choosing the right silhouette can help your outdoor dining area feel more open, intimate, or architecturally grounded depending on your space.
- Rectangular dining tables are the most versatile and work well for larger patios, decks, and long gatherings.
- Round dining tables create a more intimate dining experience and are ideal for smaller spaces or square patios.
- Square dining tables offer a balanced, modern look and are well-suited for seating four comfortably.
Do outdoor dining tables require special maintenance?
Maintenance varies by material:
- Teak: Can be left untreated or maintained with periodic cleaning and optional sealing to preserve its original color.
- Aluminum: Requires minimal care—occasional cleaning with mild soap and water.
- Concrete: Best cleaned with gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and protected with covers when not in use.
- Ceramic table tops: Extremely easy to maintain; simply clean with mild soap and water. Their non-porous surface resists staining and does not require sealing.
Using outdoor furniture covers and storing accessories during extreme weather will help extend the life of your dining table.
Can outdoor dining tables stay outside year-round?
Yes. Terra Outdoor dining tables are designed for outdoor use across a wide range of climates. In regions with heavy rain, snow, or coastal exposure, protective covers and seasonal care are recommended to keep surfaces looking their best.
Should I consider an extendable outdoor dining table?
Extendable outdoor dining tables are ideal if you entertain frequently or host larger gatherings. They provide everyday functionality with the flexibility to expand when needed, without permanently taking up extra space.
How do I pair dining tables with outdoor dining chairs?
When selecting outdoor dining chairs:
- Match seat height (typically 17-19") to table height (typically 28–30"). Allow 10-12" of space between the top of the seat and the underside of the table for proper legroom and ergonomic posture.
- Allow 24–26 inches per chair for comfortable spacing.
- Mix materials with confidence. Teak, ceramic, and concrete tables pair beautifully with aluminum, rope, or woven dining chairs.
